For non-heat treatable alloys, additional strength is imparted on the alloy by work hardening.
The alloy can then be softened to the desired properties by heating in an annealing stage.
For heat treatable alloys, strength is imparted by heating followed by quenching and aging.
Quenching is a rapid cooling process using air or water.
